This project was the final phase of a total home renovation. Previously a dated and dark kitchen, the stunning result was transformative. Bleached white oak floors and new ceiling beams add a feeling of airiness that is echoed in the floating shelves. The cabinetry is a playful mix of door styles – with a shaker-style used for the perimeter and a rift-cut slab oak cabinetry door for the island, featuring upgraded inserts for spices, knife blocks as well as pull-out drawers. The custom stainless steel hood was created using a unique painted metal technique where the paint is sprayed on, then polished off to call out the fibers and give the effect of burnished metal. The island is a rift-cut white oak with a marble counter and seating for four, with the island leg cuffs echoing the same metal treatment used in the hood. A single slab marble backsplash lightens the space, while brushed brass hardware adds sparkle. Paneled SubZero Wolf appliances flank a welcoming coffee station, and a deep white oak pantry is a focal point with vertical grain, veneer-matched slab doors.
The new layout allowed for some dramatic changes. An awkwardly situated office was converted into a dramatic bar, and the butler’s pantry was converted so the owner’s desk could be integrated into the central kitchen floor plan. Treated as an accent piece, the desk features storage cabinets on both sides, a distinctive wallpaper background, and open shelving with integrated LED lighting for highlighting decorative objects.
